Australia Day Awards

The City of Clarence Australia Day Awards recognise the achievements of individuals and events that make a real and positive difference in the community, and help to inspire others.

Our community is full of inspiring people from all walks of life and ages who every day make our city the best it can be.

Awards are presented in the categories of:

The recipients of the City of Clarence Australia Day Awards are announced at the Australia Day Breakfast on the Bellerive Boardwalk on 26 January.

 

Australia Day Awards Committee

The role of the Clarence City Council Australia Day Awards Committee is to select the recipients for the City of Clarence Australia Day Awards and oversee the promotion and presentation of the awards each year.

The current committee members are:

The term of office for committee members is four (4) years. Members may only serve two consecutive four year terms.

 

2018 City of Clarence Australia Day Award recipients

Marie Crick - Citizen of the Year

Marie is described as 'a shining light of positivity' and is committed to making Clarence Plains a better place to live.

Among Marie's many achievements was instigating the idea for the 'Brain Box' helmet program in Clarence Plains. This program ensures kids in the area have access to, and wear bike helmets.Through the program, young riders have the chance to give five hours of community service for a free helmet.

Marie was also a founding member of the Clarence Plains Spring Clean. She is a member of the GROW project steering committee to provide a community garden space and outdoor classroom for students in Clarendon Vale.

 
Christoper Smith - Senior Citizen of the Year

Christopher is an advocate for seniors and men's health. 

Christopher is a co-founding member of the Howrah Men's Shed, and is also an active and longstanding member of National Seniors Australia (NSA). He has served as committee member, vice president and president of the NSA Rosny Park branch and is described as being a pivotal leader during its infancy. Christopher is also a member of the NSA State Policy Advisory Committee.

Christopher has also delivered regular presentations at Centrelink seminars on the importance of socialisation of seniors.

 
Demi Smith - Young Citizen of the Year

Demi is a strong voice on youth issues in Clarence, particularly youth homelessness.

Demi has been a member of the Clarence Youth Network Advisory Group for the past three years, and was part of a working group for Youth Homelessness Matters Day in 2016 and 2017, which saw essential hygiene items donated to Loui's Van.

Demi has directed a short film, The Off Course Girl, submitted as part of the Hidden Others film festival and screened as part of the Salvos Sleep-Out to increase conversations about youth homelessness.

 
Carols Under the Stars - Community Event of the Year

Organised by Abundant Life Church, Carols Under the Stars is Hobart's largest and longest running free carols event.

Carols Under the Stars is a family-friendly event that brings the wider community together. The committee connects with local community groups, schools and businesses to sponsor and deliver the event. The event is supported by more than 100 volunteers and attracts more than 5,000 people each year.

In addition to the above recipients, we would like to recognise the following nominees: Jan Storr, Gill Berriman, Dorothy Batt, David Leaman, Michael Barnett, richmond Athletics Carnival, Southern Tasmanian Schools Music Showcase (Music: Count Us In), #Run4Troy and the ANZAC Day Concert.
