There will be grassland management works at Mortimer Bay Coastal Reserve on week commencing 13 February 2024 between the hours of 8:00am – 4:00pm.

For your safety there may be restricted areas during the work period – please follow any signage or instruction from council staff and contractors.

The works will help maintain the grassland with scattered shrubs and to reduce the extent and density of weeds and bracken fern. Backburning was initially scheduled last year (in 2023) but was delayed due to the high soil moisture. Vegetation slashing this year will achieve a similar outcome to planned burning.

The plan is to slash majority of the grassland, but also to retain a mosaic of small patches of shrubs and grassy understorey as habitat islands for woodland birds and bandicoots.

These works are part of Clarence City Council’s Bushfire Management Plan and works are subject to suitable weather conditions.

If you have any concerns relating to this activity, please contact council’s Fire and Bushland Vegetation Management Technical Officer Damien Whitfield on 62179 752.
