New facilities approved for Simmons Park

Lindisfarne will groove to the sounds and sights of more live entertainment, after Clarence City Council approved the construction of a new stage and facilities at Simmons Park on Lindisfarne Esplanade.

The upgrade will include a stage, barbecue facility and upgraded toilet facilities, complementing the recently upgraded playground, picnic shelter and seating in this popular recreation area.

Simmons Park has played host to the Clarence Jazz Festival for the past 18 years and the new stage will give a significant boost to this annual event, as well as Clarence’s many artists and performance groups.

The stage will not only provide a space for performances and events but will also serve as a removable picnic shelter with tables and seats which will be taken away prior to events.

Clarence Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said the upgrade would make significant additions to Simmons Park.

"This upgrade provides the community with greater access to waterfront enjoyment and entertainment, with the safest and highest quality facilities," Mayor Chipman said.

"The design of the upgraded buildings has been kept minimal and open, to a single storey, flat roofed building that will maintain existing views of the bay from the park and surrounding properties, and because we are replacing older facilities, no vegetation will be removed."

Construction of the new facilities are expected to commence in September 2015.
