Celebrating cultural diversity at World Games Day

Ever enjoyed a spot of hurling? What about Gaelic football, gridiron or ultimate frisbee?

These games and a host of others will be a feature of World Games Day at Blundstone Arena this Sunday 21 May.

World Games Day will celebrate a variety of cultural traditions and give people of all ages the chance to have a go at a variety of games from around the world.  The event will coincide with World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

Hosted by Clarence City Council, World Games Day will include Wushu, a traditional Chinese form of martial art, hurling, Gaelic football, gridiron, ultimate Frisbee and more well-known games such as hockey, badminton, cricket and softball.  There will also be a chance to toss a ball with the Hobart Hurricanes, and a Community World Cup soccer tournament.

The event also includes international dance including Cuban salsa, Bollywood, tango, Polish dancing, south Indian classical dance, along with a combined schools performance by students from Bayview Secondary College, Lauderdale, Rokeby and Clarendon Vale Primary schools.

World Games Day is also an opportunity to try cuisine from South America, Tibet, Bhutan, Liberia, Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone.

Mayor of Clarence, Alderman Doug Chipman said World Games Day celebrates the extraordinary diversity of our community.

“World Games Day is a chance to connect with people in our community from all backgrounds and cultures,” Mayor of Clarence, Alderman Doug Chipman said.

“It is a chance to share in sport, dance, music and food from other cultures in a fun and friendly environment.

“Our goal is to break down barriers, to build respect and understanding and really show the rich diversity of our community.”

This event has been supported by a multicultural grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Community Sport and Recreation Division.

World Games Day will be held Sunday 21 May from 11.00am-3.00pm at Blundstone Arena. Further details are available at www.clarenceartsandevents.net
