Damage reporting

Routine maintenance

Council conducts a routine maintenance program on roads and footpaths, in parks and gardens, on tracks and cycleways and the like. However, if you see something that needs attention, please contact us.

Vandalism

Vandalism should be the concern of all residents and ratepayers as the cost of making good the damage is borne by the community.

You can assist by reporting to Police any act of vandalism you see occurring and by reporting any damage to Council property by contacting Clarence City Council.

 

Roads and transport

Council has the responsibility to provide and maintain local roads, bridges, cycle ways, footpaths, public parking areas, street-lighting and traffic management systems within the City.

The installation of any traffic control devices such as speed humps, line marking and traffic signs also requires the approval of the State Government.

Stormwater

Council maintains and upgrades stormwater drainage and flood mitigation sytems which are designed for various drainage catchment areas.


What is stormwater?

Stormwater is the water from rain and melted snow/ice that runs off rooves, driveways, land and roads. Where stormwater is collected or redirected by development of land and structures on the land, it is required under planning rules and government legislation to be disposed of into a public stormwater drainage system or retained at the location where it was collected. If the stormwater has not been collected or redirected by development it is free to run its natural course.

 

What is not stormwater?

Stormwater doesn’t include water from a number of other sources, which can also cause issues for ratepayers and the general public such as:

  1. Potable Water: Drinking water provided by TasWater under pressure through their water reticulation network.
  2. Recycled Water: Non-potable water provided under pressure for farming use by TasWater.
  3. Effluent: Sewerage taken by TasWater and moved through the sewer network using a combination of gravity and pressure pipes. Sewerage (also referred to as “grey” or “black” water) usually has an odour and some turbidity (cloudiness).
  4. Ground Water: Water that has soaked through the surface into the ground and tracks along a solid surface such as rock or concrete until it finds an outlet (e.g. a cutting in to the ground surface) or break in the rock. Council is not responsible for groundwater as it can’t be collected by our drainage network.

 

Please Note: If you have a water issue from any of the first three above sources you should contact TasWater on 136 992. If there has been no rain in the preceding 72 hours it is unlikely to be a stormwater related issue.

 

How can I report stormwater issues?

You can report stormwater issues to the Clarence City Council switchboard on (03) 6217 9500 during business hours. For afterhours and urgent stormwater issues call the Council afterhours line on

(03) 6217 9700.

 

What information would help my stormwater enquiry?

-       Time(s) and date(s) the issue was noticed and duration of issue if known.

-       Photos or video of the issue.

-       Depth of water observed.

-       Street address of the issue.

-       Exact location of issue (road, footpath, driveway, eastern side of house, etc.).

-       If any damage to public or private property has occurred.

-       Any previous history of the issue or similar issues.

-       Any further relevant information (such as daily or hourly rain gauge readings if you have one).

-       Severity of issue (e.g. damp garden, damp garage, water inside habitable spaces in house).

 

When is stormwater not Council’s issue?

Where the stormwater main is located within the property boundary, Council is responsible for the maintenance of the mains only. Blockages in other stormwater /house drains are the property owner's responsibility. 

If the stormwater issue is caused by failure of your own internal plumbing then Council will not be able to help you with the issue; you will need to contact your plumber. If it is caused by failure of your neighbour’s plumbing then contact the Council switchboard on (03) 6217 9500 and ask for the Plumbing Inspector.


Where stormwater mains are located outside the property boundary, Council is responsible for maintenance to the first inspection opening inside the property. Please contact Clarence City Council to report any problems with Council's section of the stormwater.
