Following the tragic death of a Victorian AFL player on a covered cricket pitch, City of Clarence is putting measures in place to further protect the users of our grounds.
Player safety on shared-use ovals is our highest priority. To ensure all our grounds remain safe and compliant for AFL, cricket, and community sports, we are taking the following actions.
- Safety Audits – Conducting immediate inspections of all synthetic pitches and concrete bases to ensure full compliance with AFL Tasmania and Cricket Australia safety standards.
- Cover Inspections – Reviewing pitch covers, shock padding, and infill layers across all multi-use venues to ensure optimal impact absorption.
- Risk Management – Continuing to partner with sporting associations, tenant clubs, and ground hirers to review and enforce pre-match safety checks.
- Collaboration – with sporting associations on best practices and to adopt any emerging national guidelines to ground surface maintenance as they develop.
Reporting Concerns:
Clubs and match officials are urged to continue standard pre-game and training safety checks as per their hire agreements. Please report any maintenance or pitch cover concerns immediately via sportsgrounds@ccc.tas.gov.au
