Well-loved Neil the Seal is back.

While Neil is a popular local visitor, his health, welfare, and movements are managed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) through its Marine Conservation Program.

City of Clarence are assisting NRE by supporting traffic management in the area to help keep both Neil and the community safe.

Temporary road closures will be put in place depending on Neil’s movement and location. Please check the status of the roads below. These roads will be closed to all traffic.

Neil is a large, powerful, and wild elephant seal, who is continually on the move.

We will continue to update the community about any current road closures, which may have an impact on bus-routes and school pick-ups.

Our Rangers will also be visiting the area to ensure everyone’s safety and to help keep roads and access clear. They will issue warnings and infringements when needed.

Give Neil the space he needs

Please follow NRE’s seal watching guidelines and keep your distance.

Neil weighs around 1000-kilograms. He is potentially dangerous and may cause serious injury if approached or startled.

  • NRE wildlife officers are working to keep Neil and the community safe.
  • Follow all directions of NRE Marine Conversation Program officers, Tasmania Police, and City of Clarence officers.
  • Follow temporary traffic diversions
  • Stay at least 20 metres away (“about six Neils away”) from the elephant seal
  • Keep dogs on-lead and at least 50 metres away
  • Do not interact with Neil or attract his attention, he may interpret this as an invitation to play.

Sightings of Neil, or concerns about inappropriate behaviour around Neil the Seal should be reported to the Marine Mammal Hotline on 0427 WHALES (0427942537) or email whales@nre.tas.gov.au
