Severe high winds are forecast from Friday early morning and across the day, with gusts of between 55 km/hour up to 100 km/hour, or more.
Friday bin collections may be impacted. Your bin could be blown over, causing rubbish to spill and the bin to end up blocking roads and footpaths.
If you think your bin may be blown over, please consider waiting until the next bin collection.
Is your bin too full, or half empty?
If it’s too full or overloaded, the lid might not close properly. Make sure the lid is fully closed flat and secure.
If it’s not full to the brim, contains fewer items or rubbish bags, and is not very heavy, then consider not leaving your bin out.
Other bin collection tips to consider on windy days
- Leave your bin in a cluster of other bins, spaced at least 30 cm (a standard ruler length) apart.
- If it’s possible, leave your bin in a sheltered spot, that is still visible for the truck driver, and can still be reached by a truck arm for pick up.
- Bring in your bin as soon as possible after bin collection. This reduces the risk of bins blowing over, breaking, and blocking the road or foothpath.
- If your bin has blown over and the rubbish has spilled, consider picking up the rubbish if it is safe to do so.
