Well-loved Neil the Seal is back in Clarence.
While Neil is a popular local visitor, his health, welfare and movements are managed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) through its Marine Conservation Program.
City of Clarence are assisting NRE by supporting traffic management in the area to help keep both Neil and the community safe.
While Neil may appear relaxed, he is a large, powerful and wild animal, weighing in at 1000-kilograms. He is potentially dangerous and may cause serious injury if approached or startled. Please follow NRE’s seal watching guidelines and keep your distance.

Please give Neil the space he needs.
- NRE wildlife officers are working to keep Neil and the community safe.
- Follow the directions of NRE Marine Conversation Program officers, Tasmania Police, and City of Clarence officers
- Follow temporary traffic diversions
- Stay at least 20 metres away (“about six Neils away”)
- Keep dogs on-lead and at least 50 metres away
- Do not interact with Neil or attract his attention, he may interpret this as an invitation to play.
Sightings of Neil, or concerns about inappropriate behaviour around Neil the Seal should be reported to the Marine Mammal Hotline on 0427 WHALES (0427942537) or email whales@nre.tas.gov.au
We are aware that Neil has caused a bit of havoc in some areas, and once he has returned to the water, we will then be able to assess the damage.
