The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is carrying out new environmental monitoring for lead in dust around the Nyrstar zinc smelter in Lutana and MMG’s mine at Rosebery.
Lead has been detected in dust near both facilities, including parts of the Eastern Shore –Lindisfarne, Geilston Bay and Risdon (view the map). While metals such as lead are already known to be present in these environments, the EPA is reassessing whether there have been any changes to potential health risks since earlier studies.
We understand this update may cause concern and we will continue to support these investigations undertaken by the EPA, independent consultants, Public Health Services and WorkSafe Tasmania.
If you have specific questions about the monitoring program, please contact the EPA directly.
For information on monitoring visit the EPA website or call 0408 212 945.
In the meantime, Public Health Services has provided precautionary advice to help reduce exposure to lead:
- Wash and dry your hands before eating, drinking or smoking.
- Eat regular, well-balanced meals (including breakfast) to help reduce lead absorption, especially in children.
- Be lead safe in the garden, particularly if you grow food or keep poultry.
- Test paint for lead before carrying out renovations (kits are available from hardware and paint stores).
For health-related information on lead visit Department of Health or call 1800 671 738.
