City of Clarence is now in the caretaker period for the 2026 local government elections.
The caretaker period began when the Notice of Election was published by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission and ends when the election results are formally confirmed.
During this time, City of Clarence will continue to provide its usual services and carry out our day-to-day work. Council meetings will continue, approved projects and capital works can proceed, and planning applications will continue to be assessed.
However, there are limits on some Council and City of Clarence decisions and activities. These rules help ensure:
- City of Clarence remains neutral during the election
- public resources are not used to support election campaigns or individual candidates
- major decisions are not made that could unfairly limit the options of the newly elected Council.
During the caretaker period, Councillors will generally not adopt new policies, by-laws, strategies or master plans. There are also restrictions on some major tenders and contracts. City of Clarence advisory committees and working groups will be paused.
Councillors can continue their usual work, including attending community events and responding to residents about city matters. However, City of Clarence equipment, materials and branding must not be used for election campaigning.
Councillors are also not permitted to use the City of Clarence logo during the election period. This includes on social media, signs, flyers and electronic communications.
