A feral and stray cat trapping program begins in Richmond next week.

The Richmond Cat Management Project, run by the Ten Lives Cat Centre, aims to help reduce the number of stray and feral cats in Richmond – a known hotspot for feral cats – and protect native wildlife in the area.

Trapping will take place from 14 – 31 July 2026.

Where will trapping take place?

Trapping will occur in areas where there have been confirmed sightings of stray or feral cats, particularly near high-value natural areas such as the Richmond River and Richmond Bridge.

When will traps be set?

Traps will be set in the late afternoon after 4pm and checked by 9.30am each day in accordance with animal welfare requirements.

What should cat owners do?

To help avoid your pet being accidentally trapped, we encourage all cat owners to:

  • Keep cats safely contained on their property, particularly overnight, during the trapping period.
  • Ensure your cat’s microchip details are up to date.

What happens if my pet cat is trapped?

All trapped cats will be transported to Ten Lives Cat Centre. If a trapped cat is microchipped, staff will scan the microchip and contact the registered owner so their pet can be safely reunited with them. Cat owners can be assured their pet will be well cared for while at Ten Lives.

Thank you for helping support this important initiative to protect Richmond’s native wildlife and promote responsible cat ownership.
