Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) has confirmed the recent ‘algal bloom’ in the waters of southern Tasmania is Noctiluca scintillans and is not harmful.

Noctiluca scintillans, sometimes called ‘red tide’, has appeared at a number of Clarence beaches, and it is most noticeable around Roches and Lauderdale beaches.

The bloom is considered a nuisance species, but is not regarded as harmful to humans, however it is best avoided for recreational swimming because of the potential to cause skin irritation.

Water quality in the River Derwent is monitored daily and you can view the results on Beach Watch.
