We manage an expansive road network from South Arm in the south through to Richmond in the north and as far east as Hobart International Airport. Road and transport assets owned and maintained by
us underpin the social and economic activity of the city.

Our transport networks include:

  • 41km of gravel roads
  • 510km of kerb and gutters
  • 328 kms of footpaths
  • 27 bridges
  • 65,241m2 of public carparks
  • 28kms of cycleways

The Asset Management Plan provides the framework as to how these are maintained and managed.

Road works

Potholes

We have a regular pothole inspection and repair schedule throughout the city. This involves inspecting every road segment. All faults are marked on site, the number of faults recorded and a works order raised for the repairs. A crew then fixes all potholes on a suburb by suburb basis. Some faults require excavation and reinstatement, these repair are subject to machinery availability.

Private works on roads

If you or your company are conducting works on council-owned roads you will need to apply using the Application for a permit undertake works on or affecting a highway form.

Road closure requirements

To comply with legislative and by-law requirements the following items must be addressed:

  1. A traffic statement and traffic management designs must be provided with the Application for a permit undertake works on or affecting a highway.
    No closure will be permitted during peak traffic times. partial road opening to be maintained for the lift perpetration and mopping up period wherever possible.
  2. The location, date and times (subject to approval by City of Clarence) of the closure must be advertised in the local newspaper two weeks prior to the closure (all costs to be paid by proponent).
  3. The affected residents must be notified two weeks prior to the closure and again two days prior to the closure by letter drop.
  4. Tasmania Police, Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Ambulance service must be notified in writing two weeks prior to any closures.
  5. Waste collections service providers must be notified if their service is affected. Alternative collection points to be arranged if schedule can be maintained.
  6. All advertising and permit fees as described with the Fees and Charges must be paid prior to issuing any permit.

Rural roadside maintenance

Rural roadside maintenance has an annual program scheduled to occur during the spring and summer growth period. We may need to alter schedules at times for a number of reasons, including responding to seasonal vegetation growth or prioritising higher risk areas.

Vandalism

You can assist to limit vandalism by reporting to Police any act of vandalism you see occurring and by reporting any damage through our reporting form.

Traffic signals

Operation and maintenance of traffic signals is the responsibility of the Department of State Growth and any fault should be reported to the department by calling 1300 139 933 or emailing traffic.signals@stategrowth.tas.gov.au.

Lighting

Streetlights in Clarence are maintained by TasNetworks on our behalf.

Streetlights which are not working should be reported to us by calling 03 6217 9500, we will then notify TasNetworks to attend. If possible please take note of the nearest address and the 6-digit number on the pole so that it can be easily identified.
