What you need to know
If you need someone to witness your signature or certify a document, we can help. We have both Commissioners for Declarations and Justices of the Peace (JPs) available.
Commissioner for Declarations
A Commissioner for Declarations can:
- witness your signature
- certify a copy of an original document
- take statutory declarations
You can see one of our Commissioners every Monday and Wednesday, 9am–11am in the Council Chambers, 38 Bligh Street, Rosny. No appointment needed.
Outside these times, you can often find a Commissioner for Declarations at your local chemist or Service Tasmania (for documents they handle).
Justice of the Peace
A Justice of the Peace (JP) is an independent witness for legal and official documents.
A JP can witness:
- affidavits
- warrants
- oath
- wills
- applications for probate
- summons, and
- and, when required, statutory declarations and certified copies
Our JPs are available Monday and Wednesdays between 9.00am–11.00am at Council Chambers, 38 Bligh Street, Rosny. No appointment needed.
You can also search for JPs in your area on the Department of Justice Tasmania website.
