A major new supermarket and retail hub for Lauderdale has been unanimously approved, unlocking significant new investment for Clarence’s rapidly growing southern beach communities.
The approved development at 438–450 South Arm Road includes a Woolworths supermarket, 13 specialty retail tenancies, more than 200 car parking spaces, 20 bicycle spaces, and upgraded landscaping and pedestrian footpaths.
City of Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said the approval was an exciting development for the community.
“This marks an important step forward in delivering local services for our community,” Mayor Blomeley said.
“This decision paves the way for a new supermarket and retail hub in a central location that will support the day-to-day needs of our growing southern beach suburbs, including Lauderdale, Acton Park, Seven Mile Beach, Sandford, South Arm and Opossum Bay.”
Mayor Blomeley said the project was more than a decade in the making, with a supermarket development permit granted in 2013, which lapsed in 2017.
“This new application has progressed through a full planning process, including public consultation, ensuring community voices have helped shape the final outcome,” he said.
“Community feedback played a key role in refining the proposal, particularly in relation to pedestrian safety along South Arm Road.
“Importantly, the approved design incorporates increased pedestrian safety measures around the South Arm Road entrance to ensure the safety of school children in the area.”
The development will include a pedestrian crossing located approximately 10 metres inside the entrance driveway, along with fencing on sections of the South Arm Road footpath which will guide pedestrians to a single crossing point.
“This development will bring more people into the area, supporting existing local businesses and creating new employment opportunities,” he said.
“It helps us build a well-planned, safe and liveable city, improving access to everyday services closer to home and making life in our coastal communities that little bit easier.”
