The City of Clarence proudly joined community members on Monday 7 July for a special NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremony at Piyura Kitina (Risdon Cove), celebrating the rich history, culture, and achievements of First Nations peoples.
Hosted by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, the event featured a Welcome to Country by Janice Ross, a collective smoking ceremony, and a performance by the Children’s Centre Choir. The ceremony drew one of the largest crowds in recent memory.
Councillors and staff from a wide range of council areas, including Children’s Services, City Culture, Community Development, Natural Assets, Engineering, History and Heritage, and Community Volunteer Services, attended to show support and solidarity during this important week.
The event aligns with the City of Clarence’s Reconciliation Action Plan, which has been formally endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. The plan includes a range of actions aimed at strengthening relationships and building respect for First Nations peoples, including celebrating NAIDOC Week.
We encourage the community to take part in future NAIDOC Week events and continue supporting the journey towards reconciliation, not just this week, but every day.

And don’t forget this Saturday 12 July we’re hosting a free screening of In My Blood It Runs at Rosny Barn. Tickets are free, but registrations are essential to secure your spot.
