Approximately 78% of the City of Clarence is bushfire-prone. This means the likelihood of bushfires are high for many in our community.

When a bushfire threatens your home your safest option is to leave early.

Ways to prepare your home

  • Keep grass short around the property.

Council’s bushfire mitigation

We run a year-long bushfire mitigation schedule. This includes activities such as hazard reduction burns, slashing and mowing, and manual removal of overgrown vegetation. We also maintain fire breaks along reserve edges and fire trails to ensure access by Tasmanian Fire Service vehicles.

We currently follow our Bushfire Mitigation Strategy 2024-2034 and 18 individual bushfire mitigation plans to help deliver a holistic management approach to mitigating impacts of bushfires in Clarence.

We were also involved in Sparking Conversations Igniting Action – a joint initiative of the Greater Hobart councils – Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart and Kingborough – working side-by-side with 12 different neighbourhoods, creating bushfire risk demonstration sites, holding events and giving free bushfire risk assessments.
