The beach is usually sheltered from southern ocean swells by the South Arm Peninsula and Bruny Island but can be exposed to swells during stormy weather.
There are spectacular views from the beach of the Derwent Estuary and surrounds, from South Arm and Bruny Island in the south, to Sandy Bay and Mount Wellington in the west.
Bellerive Beach can be accessed at several locations including Bellerive Beach Park and off Alexandra Esplanade.
A beach mat has been installed at Bellerive Beach to provide access to the sand for people using wheelchairs, prams or beach trolleys, allowing them to enjoy the beach without needing to move off the mat. The recent extension of the beach mat was supported by funding from the Tasmanian Government.
