After extensive research and consultation Council is currently re-establishing an Avenue of Honour in the Waverley Flora Park near the Quarry Road entrance.
Thanks to research by local historian John Wadsley and Council staff, 19 of the 23 soldiers who were commemorated at the original site have been identified.
Four soldiers remain unnamed and Council is now seeking help from the community to try and identify these veterans so they can be acknowledged. Each was a member of the Bellerive Rifle Club, and served in WW1.
A community ceremony will be held at the site later this year to mark the 100 year anniversary of the original avenue of honour and the end of WW1 and it is hoped that all the soldiers will be identified by this time.
The Avenue of Honour works program includes an upgraded walking track along the avenue, landscaping with local native plants, planting of 23 advanced gum trees, installation of 23 sandstone plinths and brass plaques to identify each solider, installation of information signage and a sculpture.
Each named soldier will have a new plaque dedicated to them with details of their service and life after the war.
Rifle clubs were very popular post WW1, and hundreds of locals were a member of the Bellerive club at the time.
