Development approval process

The development approval process in Tasmania is administered by local government and operates through local land use planning schemes, and legislation relating to building, sanitation, safety standards and heritage conservation.

Statutory timeframes ensure timely processing of applications.

A Land Use Permit authorises use or development of land at a particular location. Assessment of whether a proposal is permitted, permitted at Council's discretion or prohibited is determined by reference to the Council's Planning Scheme. Some permit applications may require a minimum of 14 days public notification.

Permits may not be required in all instances but applicants are advised to consult with the Council in the first instance to check whether the proposed activity requires a land use or building permit.
