Garage Sale Trail, Australia’s biggest sustainability and community event, has crowned City of Clarence local school, Eastside Lutheran College ‘King of the Garage Sale in Tasmania’ as part of a nationwide campaign to find the country’s best garage sales.

This year’s Garage Sale Trail, held over the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, saw around 400,000 Australians participating in communities across the nation.

There was a record breaking 18,000 garage sale events taking place over the weekend, with over four million items set free from cupboards, garages and sheds across the country.

Locally Garage Sale Trail was made possible thanks to support from Clarence City Council.

“The King of All Garage Sales is a search for Australia’s most awesome garage sale and recognising the wonderful sellers behind them,” commented Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Darryl Nichols.

Rosemary Kennedy, the teacher who organised the sale at Eastside Lutheran College, commented that: “as part of our sustainability unit, the year 3, 4, and 5 classes collected unwanted treasures to sell and be a part of the Garage Sale Trail.”

“Our class has been instrumental in developing a recycling program at the College and recently received a Silver Environmental Sustainability Award from Business East.”

“The money we raised at the Garage Sale and the money we won will be used to purchase two replas recycled plastic benches, showing the students one of the many ways our soft plastic waste is repurposed.”

Prize money to the value of $500 will be awarded to Eastside Lutheran College as part of their win.

Clarence Mayor, Alderman Doug Chipman said “We’re proud of what Eastside Lutheran College has achieved as part of Garage Sale Trail.”

“It is encouraging to see an additional 20 individual sales in Clarence this year for the trail, demonstrating an increasing commitment to reuse in our city.”

Powered by 150 local councils, Garage Sale Trail aims to encourage reuse, celebrate creativity and connect communities in a fun and social way.

Next year’s Garage Sale Trail will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October 2019. Residents can register their event at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.
