Council last night adopted the upcoming financial year budget with an increase of 1.9 per cent in its total net rating requirement, in line with Local Government Association of Tasmania’s Council Cost Index of 1.87 per cent.
Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said the budget had been prepared to ensure Clarence ratepayers are provided with high quality services as well as facilitating new and ongoing capital works.
“The 2016-2017 budget continues Council’s program of renewal works and is consistent with its 10 year financial strategy. It includes $2.5 million towards a road reseal program, with a further $2.5 million allocated for road reconstruction. A $1.2 million investment will be made to upgrade the City’s footpaths and kerbs as well as $1.5 million allocation towards stormwater construction and enhancements planned for Elinga Street, Nelumie Street, Kellatie Road, East Derwent Highway and South Arm Road,” Mayor Chipman said.
“Council is also continuing to invest in the municipality’s future, contributing a further $3 million towards the Kangaroo Bay Development, $1 million to enhance the streetscape in Bayfield Street, and a further $480,000 to redevelop Bellerive Beach Park.
“Additional allocations provide for amenities across the City including Clarendon Vale greenbelt pathway, improvements at Lauderdale Oval, South Arm skate park, Seven Mile Beach recreational area, Roches Beach public toilet, Risdon Vale community facility, and reconstruction of Bridge Street Richmond.”
Significant operating items contained in the budget include meeting increased demand for hard-waste collection services and kerb side greenwaste collection, implementation of Council’s fire management strategy and increased maintenance of major new parks and recreational facilities throughout the City. Specific strategies will also be implemented targeting positive ageing, disability access, health and wellbeing, and a celebration of the popular Jazzfest’s 21st anniversary.
“The 2016-2017 financial year will see Clarence continue its focus on core infrastructure to ensure we uphold the high level of living standards we provide for our ratepayers, while enhancing Council services and facilities in an affordable manner,” Mayor Chipman said.
