The Barn is a unique small to medium scale visual and performing arts space which can host concerts, performances, lectures, exhibitions and workshops. The cleverly designed architectural conversion has retained the historic character of this lovely early stone barn forming an impressive setting for events and exhibitions.

History

It is thought that the barn was built around 1818, possibly by Richard Morgan, ex Norfolk Island convict, who was farming here at the time. The main use of the barn was to store hay and grain. Over the years the Barn fell into disrepair until in 1988 Clarence City Council began the huge task of conserving this significant historical site.

Through a partnership between Clarence City Council, the Tasmanian Community Fund and the YMCA in 2006 The Barn underwent a transformation to convert it into an exciting new venue fulfilling a need within the City for a space for concerts, performances and larger exhibitions.

Specifications

The Barn can seat 120 in theatre mode. It has a modular Pro-lite staging system and theatre quality lighting. The barn has in-slab floor heating for audience comfort.

In exhibition mode the Barn contains a modular panel display system with gallery lighting which can be assembled in a variety of configurations.
