Street Art Fest: Taking it back to the streets

ST.ART Fest has been a recurrent fixture on Tasmania’s event calendar for eight years and this time it’s combining an array of street art techniques with a skate competition at the new Kangaroo Bay Skate Park to be held this Saturday 27 August from 12-4pm.

The festival gives young people the opportunity to try their hand at stencilling, tape art, deck art, tattoo design plus a wide range of street art techniques under the watchful eye of renowned street artists who will also create new works.

This year, acclaimed Melbourne mixed-media street artist Shane Sterry will create works alongside locals Dexter, Jamin, Jake, Josh Pringle, Rik Siggins, Elissa Ritson, Ella Clifford and Bob O’Connor.

For the first time, the 2016 ST.ART Fest is teaming up with Know Your Odds to present a Skate, Scoot and BMX Comp throughout the day with prizes to the value of $1,700 for the best tricks.

Mayor of Clarence, Alderman Doug Chipman said ST.ART Fest inspires young people to explore evolving art forms, participate in collaborative pieces and witness the creation process from professionals.

“Council is committed to providing healthy and creative opportunities for young people to get involved in,” Mayor Chipman said.

“It seems fitting that we hold the ST.ART Fest at the Kangaroo Bay Skate Park, a facility that our young people lobbied Council for. We want to encourage our young people to get involved, to pursue and develop their creative skills, and there is no better way than learning from the best street artists to achieve this.”

ST.ART 2016 will also feature performances from Launceston duo Sumner, Kat Edwards, Georgia Coy and Ella and Sammy.

The ST.ART Fest will take place at Kangaroo Bay Skate Park this Saturday 27 August 2016 from 12-4pm. More information on the festival can be found at www.clarenceartsandevents.net.
