Bellerive Beach Park Master Plan revised to improve community safety

Clarence City Council has adopted a revised Master Plan for Bellerive Beach Park to improve the safety and accessibility for children and park users of all abilities.

Clarence City Council has adopted a revised Master Plan for Bellerive Beach Park to improve the safety and accessibility for children and park users of all abilities.

The Master Plan represents a significant enhancement of one of the most popular and prime pieces of open space in Clarence and will provide locals and visitors to the area with first class recreational facilities and amenities.

The revised plan includes all the key elements of the original Master Plan, but relocates the 56-space car park to align with Derwent Street from its current location between the beachfront promenade and the playground and picnic area.

Clarence Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said Council had commissioned an independent safety assessment, which recommended the Derwent Street option for safety reasons.

“Removing the car park from the beachfront and relocating it along Derwent Street will not only improve safety, but will also allow the prime beachfront land, currently used for car parking, to become an accessible public open space.

“Furthermore, it will reconnect the wider park to the Bellerive Beach foreshore and encourage the community to use the area for picnics, recreation and relaxation.

“The new car park will require over 350 square metres less of park land, but with the same capacity as the original design, including 56 car spaces with disabled parking bays and universal access footpath connections for users of all abilities.

“The revised design provides the community with greater access to beachside enjoyment, with the safest and highest quality facilities, including an all-abilities playground facility to cater for all age groups as well as picnic shelters, barbecues, seating, shade, ramp access and kayak launch points onto the beach.

“Once complete, the Master Plan will further reaffirm Clarence as one of the most liveable cities in Australia now and into the future.”
